A loose-leaf planner or notebook only fits your binder when the paper size and the number of holes match. Here is a quick chart of the common sizes.
Japanese loose-leaf sizes and holes (quick chart)
| Size | Paper size | Common hole count | Hole spacing |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | 30 holes | 9.5 mm |
| B5 (JIS) | 182 × 257 mm | 26 holes | 9.5 mm |
| A5 | 148 × 210 mm | 20 holes (some products use 22) | 9.5 mm |
| B6 | 128 × 182 mm | Varies by product (Timekeeper Deco uses 21 holes, our own standard) | Timekeeper Deco: 8.47 mm |
| Mini (L size) | 86 × 128 mm | 9 holes | 9.5 mm |
A4, B5, A5 and Mini share the same 9.5 mm hole spacing, so the hole positions line up. B6 hole counts differ between products, so count the rings on your binder first.
JIS B5 and ISO B5 are different
Japanese B5 (JIS) is 182 × 257 mm. ISO B5, used in most other countries, is 176 × 250 mm. "B5 26-hole" loose-leaf in Japan means JIS B5.
